That this house supports the retention of Australia Day on 26 January as a day to commemorate and celebrate our past, present and future achievements as a nation and encourages all councils to conduct Australia Day citizenship ceremonies on this special day.
Ms Peulich brought the motion to the house in light of concerns raised in relation to a disturbing trend of erasing, sanitising or revising history including some councils abolishing Australia Day celebrations and citizenship ceremonies.
The Greens, including Nina Springle MLC for the South Eastern Metropolitan Region failed to support the motion.
Quotes from Inga Peulich, Member for South Eastern Metropolitan Region
“Australia Day is a special day for communities to celebrate, reflect on what it means to be an Aussie and thank those who have contributed to society.”
Ms Peulich said, “the Greens opposition is un-Australian.”
“When we start demolishing monuments, erasing history and sanitising history, we are doomed to repeat it and forget it.”
“We must continue to hold onto our values and celebrate what is great about being Australian.”
