The application was made following comments by Member for South Eastern Metropolitan Region, Inga Peulich MLC criticising Cr Staikos in State Parliament for attempting to discriminate against Liberal Candidate and fellow Councillor Geoff Gledhill.
Cr Staikos sort to exclude Councillors running for state parliament from engaging in council meetings and briefings, liaising with other councillors and staff, effectively quashing Cr Gledhill from fulfilling his electoral duties and ability to represent his constituency.
Ms Peulich said that Cr Staikos should be counselled by the Minister for Local Government as misuse of his position for party political benefit is not allowed by the Local Government Act 1989.
Comments attributable to Member for South Eastern Metropolitan Region, Inga Peulich MLC:
“Cr Staikos and his fellow political travellers running Kingston have focussed excluding a Liberal councillor but have been silent on the broader principle,” Ms Peulich said.
“There are other councillors who are also political candidates for the 2018 state election, including Dandenong’s Labor Cr Heang Tak.”
“Cr Rosemary West, who voted for Cr Staikos’ motion to shut Cr Gledhill down, did not call for such reforms when she was a political candidate and a councillor at the 2014 State Election,” Ms Peulich said.
