The motion, if passed with the support of the Greens and the Andrews’ Labor Government, would strip funding from Catholic and Independent Schools, hospitals such as St. Vincent's and St. John of God, and numerous agencies delivering vital community services.
The Greens, the Victorian Labor Government and the Sex Party have repeatedly collaborated to remove religious freedom and support policies such as Safe Schools, a values indoctrination program for schools, and euthanasia, which has been strongly opposed by religious organisations.
If successful, the motion moved by Ms Patten would place unsustainable pressure on state hospitals, schools and service providers, undermining access to and quality of health and education available to Victorians.
Ms Patten's motion seeks to remove exclude the advancement of religion as a charitable purpose , to amend the Duties Act 2000, the Payroll Tax Act 2007 and the Land Tax Act 2005, and for other purposes.
Quotes attributed to Inga Peulich MLC, Shadow Minister for Multicultural Affairs:
“Only the Liberal National Coalition has consistently defended the rights and interests of our faith communities by protecting their religious freedom and opposing policies which undermine their values.”
“If a political party does not support religious freedom within our legal framework, then it does not support multiculturalism.”
