The petition follows Ms Peulich successfully moving a motion in State Parliament calling on the State Government to comply with International Ramsar obligations.
“Legislation requires Premier Andrews and the Victorian State Government to refer the State Government’s own Sky Rail project to the Federal Department of Environment and Energy to commission an Environmental Impact Assessment,” Ms Peulich said.
The petition is calling for an Environmental Impact Assessment on the effects elevated rail will have on the ecology of the Ramsar protected Edithvale - Seaford Wetlands. This includes protecting species and flight paths of migratory birds, especially the endangered Australasian Bittern and Australia’s rarest bird the critically endangered Orange-bellied parrot, that rely on the Ramsar listed Edithvale-Seaford Wetlands.
“This is not an option for Daniel Andrews. It’s a legislative requirement,” Ms Peulich said.
Mrs Peulich said that the Ramsar convention requires the project to be assessed for its negative impact on the hydrology, ecology of protected and endangered species and the flight paths of migratory birds protected by the convention.
“Premier Andrews has failed to ensure that a proper Environmental Impacts Study is being conducted, but he cannot defy Federal legislation and international conventions to which Australia is a signatory and his departments and agencies are contracted parties,” Ms Peulich said.
