As part of its increasingly problematic plans for removal of level crossings, Labor committed to building a bridge at the deadly Abbotts Road level crossing but consultation documents reveal the plan is to permanently close Abbotts Road and redirect traffic down Remington Drive where a bridge will be built instead.
Ms Peulich said the move was another slap in the face for Cranbourne, Lynbrook and Lyndhurst motorists.
“Cranbourne, Lynbrook and Lyndhurst motorists are sick of being stuck in traffic, and now Labor will make commuters sit in it for an extra 1.5km each way,” Ms Peulich said.
“It takes up to 45 minutes to cross Westernport Highway on Thompson Road, 35 minutes at Hall Road, and up to 40 minutes on Glasscocks Road – a dirt road!
“It can take 40 minutes to get down Abbotts Road to turn at South Gippsland Highway, and now they’re planning to extend that by 1.5km, as well as putting more pressure on the Pound Road intersection which will impact on South Gippsland Highway, Greens Road and the Dandenong Bypass.
“When will the madness end?
Ms Peulich said it seemed about 80% of Abbotts Road evening peak traffic turned right at the highway so would be disadvantaged by the change.
Ms Peulich said Labor’s plan broke its promise to fix the Abbotts Road crossing.
“It’s another broken promise from Daniel Andrews.
Many local businesses will suffer as a result of the changes. Those on the eastern end of Abbotts Road will lose their direct connection across the rail line. Those along Remington Drive will have heavy congestion dropped on their doorstep. Businesses using Abbotts Road to take products to Cranbourne, Lynbrook, Lyndhurst and beyond would have a longer journey.
Ms Peulich said Member for Cranbourne Jude Perera needs to speak for his community rather than just following the Labor Party’s line.
The people in Cranbourne, Lynbrook, Lyndhurst and beyond need Jude Perera to stand up on this issue and save commuters 3km extra a day in traffic.
Motorists can find a petition at IngaPeulich.org that calls on the Andrews Government to abandon its plan to permanently close Abbotts Road.
