Greyhound owners and industry groups have raised concerns the Code has gone too far and that compliance could put some out of business.
The Sandown Greyhound Racing Club is a strong contributor to the sector in Victoria, as one of 13 clubs that generate a combined $400 million and employ about 3000 people.
To make a submission on the draft Code visit http://agriculture.vic.gov.au/pets/dogs/greyhounds/code-of-practice. Submissions close August 14.
Comments attributable to Inga Peulich MLC, State Member for South Eastern Metropolitan Region:
“Sandown Greyhound Racing Club has a long and strong history in City of Greater Dandenong and is an important part of our social fabric, as well as being a strong economic contributor.”
“The future of this club and those who are involved with it and enjoy a night out at the greyhounds should not be threatened by the current over regulation being proposed by Daniel Andrews.”
“It is time local Labor MP Gabrielle Williams stood up for her community and concerns that this draft Code could put some locals out of business.”
Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Racing Tim Bull:
“The Liberal-Nationals support greyhound racing in Victoria and we believe this code of practice looks like overreach by the Andrews Labor Government and a banning by stealth.”
“If the Andrews Labor Government wants to ban greyhound racing they should just say so instead of this mealymouthed attempt.”
“Those in the industry caught doing the wrong thing should not only be banned from the industry but also receive a punitive punishment that makes an example of them to others who ever contemplate doing the wrong thing.”
