Community groups like “Empowering Monash & YOU” have previously called for live streaming to give elderly citizens, people with disabilities and others who cannot attend access, as well as the increased accountability that comes with recordings.
State and Federal Parliaments are streamed live, as are many local Councils. Monash Council is not streamed and a recent proposal for streaming to occur was moved by Crs Zographos, Davies and Pontikis, but voted down by the Labor Councillors. It will be revisited in 2017, well after the forthcoming federal and Council elections.
Cr Paul Klisaris is Labor’s candidate for Aston, and Cr Stefanie Perri is Labor’s candidate for Chisholm for the federal election.
Quotes attributed to Inga Peulich MLC, State Member for South Eastern Metropolitan Region:
“The community has a right to know what is happening in Council. They want greater accountability, better access and better behaviour.
“If Council meetings were recorded, people could see for themselves how intense Cr Klisaris’ behaviour was, and whether Mayor Stefanie Perri’s leadership was appropriate. It may backup eyewitness accounts that both behaved inappropriately or it may clear their names.
“The Councillors would also know that they have to behave because they don’t who might be watching – the voters, the media, their parents. It would lead to better behaviour and better outcomes for the community.
