The crumbling of local roads and depth of neglect of road maintenance is scandalous, says a local Upper House MP.
Inga Peulich MLC, State Member for the South Eastern Metropolitan Region and Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Communities has slammed the State Government for subjecting drivers to serious risks of road accidents and injuries due to deteriorating local roads.
“The unsealed shoulders along Wells Road become like an obstacle course,” Ms Peulich said.
“When turning right into Edithvale Road from Wells Road, a driver risks losing a muffler or careering off the road especially after daylight hours.”
“The potholes and cavities, varied road surfaces and debris are a real danger to the tens of thousands of private, commercial and heavy rigid vehicles that use local roads daily,” Ms Peulich said.
“Such hazardous driving conditions place lives at risk and damage cars, leaving drivers with costly repairs.”
Ms Peulich said that the Brumby Labor Government failed to set aside enough funds for regular road maintenance and did not invest in local road infrastructure.
“It is a disaster waiting to happen and if a life is lost, the Brumby Government will have it on their hands,” Ms Peulich said.
“The Brumby Government must act now to make this a safe stretch of road for the community and help to put a halt to the increasing road toll.”
